WS FROM THE PRESIDENT
I was once told that you become a part of everyone you meet in life. I never really believed in that theory but I think those you do meet in life can have an effect on you. Back in October of 1990 while working at Northland Mall here in Detroit, an elderly lady stopped me to ask for directions to one of the two bookstores located in the mall at the time. I advised her on how to get there but I also informed her I was headed that way and would escort her to the store. While walking and talking with this lady I kept thinking I know this woman from somewhere. When we arrived at the store she said thank you for escorting me. I said,
“no problem” and walked away. Fate just so had it about an hour later I ran into this woman again and she was looking for the bus stop. Once again I walked her to the door where the bus stop was located. At that door the elderly woman asked my name, which told her but I asked the one question that had been on my mind which was “Did anyone ever tell you that you look a lot like Rosa Parks?” She smiled and said yes I am Rosa Parks. I almost fainted at that moment.

I was just in awe of this petite woman who was larger than life to me. Needless to say I was honored that we had a chance to speak that day.
I had an opportunity to talk with Mrs. Parks a couple of more times before her health issues started to catch up with her. The one thing I discovered about her was she never expected or wanted to be treated like the icon she was. Mrs. Parks was just happy to be able to walk though the mall without folks speaking to or recognizing her like some kind of rock star. I admired her for that.
So here is a catch phrase you will hear mentioned over the next couple of months “She sat down so we could stand up.” I hope this statement will help everyone remember that a lot of the freedoms you have today is because a woman decided 50 years ago that it was time to be free. About 7 years ago I met a man after seeing one of his plays. In our conversation I couldn’t help being drawn into the way he described how he goes about writing. On October 2, playwright August Wilson died of liver cancer. I will always remember seeing several of his works especially the plays
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom," "Fences" and my favorite “The Jitney.” I am glad TCA Travel Club got a chance to see some of his plays over the past few years. I am sure he will be missed.
Last month I wrote about TCA Travel Club beginning and promoting a walking club. Walking has so many health benefits including better memory, building muscle, losing weight, and endurance. Usually there is a lot of walking on vacations in general. By having a walking routine to get you into shape this will help you get more out of your vacations. If anyone wants to sign up to walk with us a couple of days a week, please contact the office.
